BACKGROUND: wiki page

PERSONALITY: Bakugou Katsuki is introduced as the former childhood friend and current bully of series protagonist, Izuku “Deku” Midoriya. Bakugou was praised from a young age for being smart, brave, strong, and for his powerful quirk. In this world, 80% of the population is born with a unique ability called a quirk, Bakugou's being generating powerful explosions in the palms of his hands. He’s a cocky, rude kid who truly believes he is better than everyone else. That is, until he gets to U.A. High, the top school for aspiring heroes. There he realizes he’s not as great as he thought he was.

That fact, well, it pisses him off. Bakugou has a temper as explosive as his hands, and frequently directs it at his classmates. Particularly at Deku, with whom he seems incapable of speaking to without yelling. Bakugou has a huge superiority/inferiority complex and is always on high alert for threats to his pride. To him, the truly strong can do everything on their own, so he is incredibly resistant to accepting help. In fact, when Deku helps save him from a villain, he is actually angry. To him, Deku’s kindness and altruism is equivalent to “looking down on him” and pity. This gets even worse in the wake of Deku’s sudden acquisition of a quirk, which Bakugou assumed he’d just been hiding and “laughing at him” this entire time. For him, nothing was more insulting than the formerly weak, good for nothing Deku suddenly being on his level. Though Bakugou is capable of recognizing other people’s strength, even that people might be stronger than him, he’s incapable of being OK with it. Instead he just angrily swears to get stronger until this situation has been resolved. Bakugou is incredibly skilled at taking any situation and twisting it into an attack on his pride. Even when it doesn’t involve him, such as Todoroki personally challenging Deku before the sports festival. He perceived this as a slight because it suggested Deku was a bigger threat than him. He wasn’t even satisfied in his victory against Todoroki, since the other boy didn’t use his full powers in the fight. Bakugou’s pride is so important to him that, despite proclaiming to everyone in attendance at the start that he was going to win the sports festival, he adamantly refused the victory that he felt wasn’t properly earned so violently that he had to be put in heavy restraints and muzzled for the awards ceremony. (I’m linking the image because I want to be clear that this isn’t an exaggeration.)

As much as it can cause trouble, this pride is what holds this angry pile of teenage hormones together. It’s this pride that pushes Bakugou to Alway Be Better, and it’s also this pride that makes him entirely incorruptible. The League of Villains kidnaps Bakugou at one point, misreading his anger and poor attitude as a sign that he would be easy to turn over to the villains. This ends up being entirely wrong, not on moral grounds or anything, but because Bakugou always has to win, and of course, heroes are supposed to win. Deku and Bakugou both strive to become heroes because of (current #1 ranked hero) All Might, but while Deku was inspired by All Might’s heroic acts, Bakugou was inspired by “the way All Might looks when he wins.” While it’s not the most heroic of reasons, it’s one that’s so important to Bakugou that even being cornered by a room full of adult villains, he doesn’t even consider wavering from that path. It’s easy to look at this easily agitated, screaming boy and assume he’s an idiot. And sure, he often makes terrible dumb decisions when he’s mad. But he also has the awareness to realize it was stupid when it’s pointed out after the fact. And in general, Bakugou is a lot smarter than he lets on. He's got the third best grades in their class, and as is pointed out, the way he uses the force of his explosions for very precise aerial maneuvers takes a lot of planning and calculation. He’s capable of strategizing in the middle of a fight as well as analyzing others when on the sidelines. As flashy as his costume is, he designed it with how to best maximize his powers in mind. Even other students recognize it despite teasing him for his temper, with Kaminari once referring to him as a “natural genius.”

Generally, Bakugou’s relationship with his classmates is tense and aloof. Everyone tolerates his attitude for the most part, besides friendly teasing that Bakugou predictably takes poorly. When he's not worked up he tends to be quiet and sullen, keeping to himself. In fact, months into the term, he doesn't remember the names and quirks of a bunch of his classmates. Even worse, he once refers to students from other classes as “extras,” as it's how little they matter in his book. After all, why would he pay attention to people he’s better than? He's fine with being solitary, as far as he’d tell you. Deku is an obvious exception as far as attention goes, since Bakugou is so focused on beating him. He has a lot of anger directed at Deku due to the perceived slights, and either is unmoved by or doesn't believe Deku’s claims that he's always looked up to Bakugou and thinks he's “amazing,” for all his talent and determination. For Bakugou, someone who he used to consider nothing more than a “pebble in the road” suddenly becoming someone who can challenge him is, well, terrifying. He's always had Deku as this benchmark of how he's so much better, but now he can't rely on that being true, and that uncertainty scares him, which makes him angry because he's supposed to be a Big Damn Hero, he’s not afraid of anything. The one person in class that Bakugou seems relatively friendly with is Eijiro Kirishima, who seems to have befriended Bakugou by sheer force of ignoring his rudeness. For example, when Kirishima makes a friendly comment about the next match in the tournament being him and Bakugou, the reply he gets is “I’m going to beat you to death” which he responds to with “haha, I’d like to see you try!” He neither tries to police Bakugou’s bad behavior (like the class rep, Iida) nor tease him for it. He was one of the first people in the class to notice the calm, analytical side of Bakugou, and seems to focus more on this “cool, manly” side of him. Bakugou takes every critique of his character and behavior as a personal attack, so with Kirishima he has no reason to be on alert as he is with everyone else. These lowered boundaries are seen during a joint rescue effort where Kirishima is the one to offer him a hand directly. Bakugou, who normally hates receiving help or being rescued because it makes him feel weak, smiles and accepts the help without question.

Overall, Bakugou is a boy who is out to prove he’s the best, not just to everyone else but also himself. He knows he isn't yet, and that insecurity is expressed in the form of undirected anger. Heisn't looking for other people to tell him he’s strong, though. He's been told he's talented his entire life. It doesn't mean anything to him at this point, the only way he can prove he's the best is by becoming the best. For Bakugou, the fact that he works incredibly hard is why he deserves the top spot. This is why things like Deku suddenly becoming a challenger out of nowhere, or being unable to do anything in the face of a stronger enemy make him so angry. When it comes down to it, Bakugou talks a big game, and brings a big game, but at the end of the day is still a teenage boy still growing into an adult. He's incredibly strong and brave, but underneath all that bite, or rather behind it, is a lot of negative feelings. He may have been all fire and anger, ready to take on anyone when a team of adult villains captured him, but when his hero All Might shows up to save him, you can see that crumble away for just a second before he adamantly insists he wasn’t scared and fuck you for thinking he was. He'snot sure of himself, his concept of his own strength is constantly being challenged, and he's finally starting to suffer consequences for his poor behavior after it was left unaddressed for many years. But he’s young and smart enough to start to realize something has to change if he wants to be a real hero.

SUITABILITY: Unsurprisingly Bakugou is not known to work well with others. That said, when he tries, he’s actually pretty good at working with others, in a roundabout way. During the cavalry battle at the sports festival, he’s seen quickly giving orders to use several of his teammates quirks to achieve his objective. As well, it's commented that Bakugou’s aggressive unyielding determination to be The Best rather than just good enough pushes his teammates to try harder as well. In fact Bakugou is cited along with Deku as a key rallying influence in the class. He’s NOT going to be happy about the unsolicited relocation, but he’ll view the new situation as a challenge, and whatever mission their on as something he needs to “win.” He is still a kid, of course, but having a mission to focus his attention on will actually help him not be overwhelmed by the situation. He probably won’t take direct orders from ALASTAIR NPCs very well, since he won’t trust or respect them, but he can be counted on to at least do something constructive because saving worlds/timelines is DEFINITELY something a hero would do.

ABILITIES:
QUIRK: Bakugou’s “quirk” is manifested by the sweat in his palms essentially being nitroglycerin, which he can ignite on command to create powerful explosions. They can range in size from being relatively small enough to singe a notebook without destroying it, to large enough to take out a significant portion of a concrete wall. While Bakugou is generally not affected by his explosions, he says there is a limit on how powerful an explosion he can make without injuring himself, though he can and has gone beyond this limit, causing damage to his hands and arms. The more Bakugou sweats, the larger an explosion he can make, so his combat ability is limited when it is colder out, purportedly.
Blast Rush Turbo: A catch-all name for various applications Bakugou has for using his quirk for mobility purposes. His explosions can generate enough force to quickly propel Bakugou through the air and across the ground (away from whatever direction the force of the explosion was,) something he does often to compensate for his quirks mostly short range combat potential. He has demonstrated using it with great precision, even able to modify his course mid-air to set up for an attack before landing.
Stun Grenade: Putting his hands together, Bakugou creates a bright explosion to temporarily blind his opponent. Like an actual stun grenade (a.k.a. Flash grenade of flashbang) its primary function is to disorient, not injure.
Howitzer Impact: Bakugou while airborne positions his hands so that explosions give him a spinning trajectory before firing a massive explosion at his target. I don’t know why turning it into some sort of fire tornado is necessary, I assume he just thinks it looks cool.

COMBAT ABILITIES: While Bakugou’s quirk is actually relatively simple, he’s managed to make it quite versatile through creative usage, such as using it to move himself, or using it to simply add more force to a punch or throw (his farthest recorded softball throw is 709 meters). Bakugou has always been a rowdy child, but he has also always been a smart child, so while his fighting style is brutal, he’s also shown to be creative and capable of analysing a combat situation to determine his best course of action, such as determining that Kurogiri needed to be dealt with first and foremost during the League of Villains attack on USJ due to his warping quirk being the means by which the villains could easily escape, as well as what the exact weakness is of a man made of fucking smoke based on a single thing he said. Bakugou has been training to fight for a long time, so he’s more experienced that you’d expect a 15 year old to be. Honestly, his biggest weakness his his temper, as if he lets it go to his head (which he does, frequently,) he will often do things that even he admits were stupid and a poor call immediately after the fact.

INVENTORY: Bakugou will arrive in his hero costume (see above.) This includes his grenadier bracers, and the grenades on his belt. The bracers store a large amount of his sweat, which can be used to fire a massive explosion when the pin in them is pulled. Bakugou requested them made, both to give himself a “ranged” attack (it’s a BIG explosion) and to allow him to set off an explosion of the size he can’t normally make without injuring himself. It does produce a significant amount of recoil, potentially injuring the shoulder of someone not used to it. The grenades are similarly filled with his sweat but are otherwise normal grenades.

NETWORK SAMPLE:
[It’s customary to start your video feed by scowling as if whoever’s on the other end has said something rude to you, right? Because that's the look on this blond teenager’s face.]

So I know a lot of people here are quirkless [A pause, then amends,] I mean, don't have any special powers. I don't care about you, ignore this post.

Anyway, for the rest of you that are actually maybe worth my damn time, tell me what you can do. I can do this; [He holds up a hand, a grapefruit sized explosion going off in his palm. The force of the blast blows his bangs up off his forehead an inch.] Obviously I can make it a lot bigger.

[Dropping his hand with an annoyed sigh.]
I don't fucking understand why they’d put me on a team with a bunch of weak idiots who can't even do anything, but that just means we have to make the most of what we do have. That's all. Don't waste my time with idle conversation.
